Larry Roots
On the Surface

rootsLarry Roots is one of our region’s most active artists and gallery directors. To celebrate his thoughtfully composed abstract artworks, the Art Center is bringing together a large selection of work he has created in recent years. Roots has the ability to use paint and a variety of other materials to portray emotions and ideas that are incapable of being expressed well through everyday verbal communication. There is in his work the sense that he is painting forces and ideas rather than things, even if his art occasionally gives us the slightest glimpse of a landscape, a figure, or a written language.

Roots earned his B.A. in painting from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley. Though he is a full-time artist, he also directs two galleries with his wife Judy: Modern Arts Midwest in Lincoln, Nebraska and Modern Arts Midtown in Omaha, Nebraska.

City Art Quilts

dutch mastersIn conjunction with the Artilicious event on the first floor, the Main Gallery re-opens after the Leonardo da Vinci Blockbuster exhibition with a show of works from its most recent community art project, City Art Quilts. This project kicked off in 2010, bringing scores of drawings by artists from throughout the region, which led to the creation of two dozen City Art Quilts that were placed throughout Sioux City.

This exhibition brings all of these works back to the Art Center for a final exhibition and sale. The quilts include 4-foot square versions on MDO board that are suitable for outdoor settings, 3-foot versions on canvas that are great for indoor settings, and framed drawings that are perfect for that little empty spot on your walls.

Work by Students in North Middle and High School
  August 4 – September 23, 2012
Work by Students in North Middle and High School

Working in cooperation with the art teachers of Sioux City Community Schools, the Art Center is presenting a series of exhibitions featuring work by elementary, middle and high school students. While the annual Youth Art Month exhibition allows the Art Center to showcase a wide range of student work through a competitively juried exhibition, the exhibitions in the Community Gallery permit teachers to select the best works produced by their students. Both projects are testaments to the creative energy of our community’s teachers and the artistic talent of our young artists.
