Work by Students in East Middle and High School
  April 6 – May 19, 2013
Work by Students in East Middle and High School

Working in cooperation with the art teachers of Sioux City Community Schools, the Art Center is presenting a series of exhibitions featuring work by elementary, middle and high school students. While the annual Youth Art Month exhibition allows the Art Center to showcase a wide range of student work through a competitively juried exhibition, the exhibitions in the Community Gallery permit teachers to select the best works produced by their students. Both projects are testaments to the creative energy of our community’s teachers and the artistic talent of our young artists.

The Values of Drawing
 Reception: Saturday, December 15, 5:00 - 7:00 pm December 15, 2012 – April 14, 2013
The Values of Drawing
Blair Benz, Larassa Kabel, Justin Meyers, Marlene Mueller, Jan Zelfer-Redmond

The Values of Drawing presents five artists working in Iowa and Nebraska who are exceptional when it comes to achieving textural subtlety from pencil and charcoal drawings. Works range widely in size and subject matter.

Blair Benz creates perfectly crafted, intimate charcoal drawings that present objects in a somewhat theatrical manner, heightened dramatically by his ability to achieve a sense of depth in his images.

Larassa Kabel’s unusual portraits of people and animals rely succeed in great part because of her uncanny skill at rendering soft and fragile details, regardless of the scale of the work.

Justin Meyers works in both charcoal and graphite in a straightforward, yet unsparingly intense manner, whether working on portraits or still-life images.

Marlene Mueller has studied the combinations of fire, smoke, and wood in large images that are rich and beautiful notwithstanding the subject matter.

Jan Zelfer-Redmond uses drawing mediums much more for pure mark-making or shaping an atmosphere, rather than for a depiction of people or things.

This exhibition has been underwritten in part by the Aalfs Family Foundation.
